Why I love Thailand…

Thailand …..The Land of Smiles ūüôā and temples… and so much more…

Golden budha in the forest

Many years ago when we first visited Thailand it stole a corner of my heart and although it is a country of many contradictions to me it is home.

Why? I don’t know…I have family in many different countries and have loved my visits..have I wanted to put down roots there ?…No!

Thailand just does it for me…

Whether its beautiful unspoiled beaches and there are many.

beach and chairs nice pic

Sunsets which are so amazing, diving, rock climbing or just living among the people.

Sunset (2)

Where we have experienced the real Thailand, the amazing food..which we have tasted which is not cooked purely for the tourists.

For my dear friend Annie I have amended this post..how I could forget our favourite Thai curry…I don’t know..but I did…One of my all time favorite Northern Thai Curries is Khao Soi. I was introduced to it by my dear friend Annie and we would do our research once a month to find the best Khao Soi and have a bit of a girlie chat and maybe a vino or two….as you do!

Khao Soi is a beautiful yellow curry with chicken( Gai) or pork(Moo) with soft yellow noodles and topped with crispy noodles.

Khao Soi

Served with a side of pickled cabbage, lime, shallots and if it isn’t hot enough then some lovely hot, fried chilli mix.

The beautiful countryside and it really is the land of smiles.

We have stayed in villages where the children by our standards have nothing by comparison but they are happy, they have carefree childhoods bought up with love.

Thai boys in tree

Yes there is the seedy side…but so is there in all countries.

Bangkok…..I love it..so vibrant and alive….I have wandered down at midnight to get something to eat at one of the street stalls…do I feel unsafe…never ever. I am given a seat to sit on while I wait..hastily they rub the seat over with a not so clean cloth…do I care…No! They treat madam as they call me like a special visitor and when I say Thai hot …the smile I get and they tell everyone who will¬†listen….”Oh Madam she eat spicy”

What they prepare and cook the food in is spotless..the vegetables so fresh…the food amazing…

China Town and the markets….. I love Bangers as I call it but only for a few days and then I am back to the peace and calm which is home.

Pageantry the Thais love it..every procession is so joyous…..The Vegetarian Festival…..Songkram… Loy Krathong…

..if you love being part of festivals make sure you come at the right time ..you will not be disappointed.

Aston Songcram my favorite photo

The noise, the street food and partying is amazing and to be part of it so special.

Have you visited Thailand…If not ..you will not be disappointed…

I hope you enjoyed this post and you can see why I love this country…Over the next few months, I will be taking you to some of the beautiful places I have visited, places which are off the beaten track…The real Thailand and the one¬†I love.

Until next time stay safe, have fun and laugh a lot and if you fancy a boogie then pop over to Sally’s¬† from Smorgasbord Health 2017 …I will be there as will many others ..lots of fun and frolics….. See you there….

Wat Baan Waeng or Heaven and Hell.

50 km’s north of Udon Thani where we now live is Wat Baan Waeng or Pho Chai Sri as it is also known.

It is home to larger than life statues and sculptures which depict the heaven and hell side of Buddhism. So in other words if you stray from the path of the five precepts of Buddhism then “Hell” is what awaits you.

It shows the fate or karma of these individuals and the gory fates that await them for their sins.

SAM_8983

Initially when we pulled into the temple we were met with the scene of monks sitting, children playing and stalls selling trinkets, spiritual items and a well. The water level of which is always very high so if you do want to peer down into the blackness then first remove your shoes before you step onto the plinth. The well according to local folktales just appeared!

Such tranquility that we  thought we had chanced upon the wrong temple(wat).

But no, if you follow the path lined with Buddhas statues you will be led through beautiful gardens, music playing, good food and drink everything that heaven is meant to be.

SAM_8924

Happy smiles and music playing.

SAM_8921

All plaques and writing are in Thai so it will enhance your visit if you have someone with you who can read Thai.

SAM_8916

The tree of life depicting the man or king at the top surrounded by ladies. Showing as flowers hanging from the tree of life.

SAM_8913

Do not be fooled!

You are now entering hell.

SAM_8928

You will then come upon statues showing the horrific torture that you would suffer if you went to hell. Depending on your sin your punishment would fit the crime. A liar would have his tongue removed and a thief his hands.

Forced to climb the thorny tree or be eaten by the waiting dogs. It looks like he wasn’t quite quick enough.

SAM_8931

A liar…Off with your tongue!

SAM_8946

Boiling liquid!

SAM_8956

Cruelty to animals will not be tolerated.

SAM_8960

Karma reigns!  What goes around comes around as the saying goes.

SAM_8977

A fruitless gesture, begging for mercy I don’t think any mercy was going to be granted here.

I hope you enjoyed this trip through heaven and hell, it will be on my to visit again list as there is a temple being built in the middle of the lake there which promises to be a lovely tranquil place to sit and read or write.

If you enjoy my travels around Thailand I can also be found on Niume and Mytrendingstories where I share my travels and recipes, fruits of Thailand and much more.

Wat Pa Phu Kon, Issan, Northern Thailand

Standing proud on top of a hill in 400 acres of lush green fields and forests  surrounded by other hills  is this beautiful little known temple, unless you have a Thai connection or live in Issan many people are not aware that it even exists. It has a stunning aqua blue roof and literally sparkles in the sunlight and the blue of the roof reflect of the blue sky so there this is shimmering bright blue aura around the temple, it is sight to behold.

It is very popular with Thais and we arrived on one of the busiest of days a holy Buddha day luckily we had left early but even so the queue for the trucks to take us to the top of the hill was fairly long but we were shaded by the trees which surround this lovely temple.

You can drive to the top of the hill but on busy days like this they have trucks to ferry you upwards as the car park at the top is very small for the amount of cars there would be.

The dress code is very strict here. No sleeveless t/shirts or blouses, No shorts or skirts above the knee. Thai style skirts or trousers will be lent to you in the event your dress is unsuitable.

It is quite a new temple and very clean and bright it has spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and although very busy on this holy Buddha day has an aura of peace and calm.

Nga snakes guard the entrance to the main temple and inside is a stunning white marble reclining Buddha which is made out of 43 blocks of exquisite Italian Carrara marble each weighing 15-30 tons each block. The cost of building this  was in excess of 50 million baht and was a generous donation by an elderly Thai lady in honour of the king. This temple also houses  lots of carvings and numerous other Buddha images in gold and marble. The wall painting show a story of ten reincarnations of Buddha. It is beautiful to see.

We were met with the sight of many people holding prayer mats and walking and praying as they circled the reclining Buddha, it is lovely to see people laying bare their faith and love for Buddha it is something which always humbles me here wherever people feel the need to pray¬† they do…..

If you live in Issan or ever travel to here it is a beautiful temple and worth the visit. The isolation and peaceful natural environment makes this an ideal place for meditation so if you crave solitude and tranquility then this is the place for you.

I hope you enjoyed this little tour around this lovely temple.

Until next time stay safe and laugh a lot and if you want to share this post with your friends I would be honoured.

26 Week Letter Challenge “W”

Well it was just by the seat of my¬†pants…phew….. Now we have “W” and it’s getting so near the end of this one …. See Lori’s¬†Here ¬†https://lumar1298.wordpress.com/2016/08/22/26-weeks-letter-challenge-w/¬†¬†She has some great photos.

I am sure I can’t match these…I just point and click and it’s all about luck… certainly not judgement with¬† moi….

Well….Water which we have lots of it here…Floods, sea, lakes and Songkram..Thai new year when there are lots of water pistols and some are sure big boys.

Whats next ?¬†¬† Water Buffalo who sure look a tad grumpy at being watched…

Wat’s ( Temples) to us …All beautiful..some grand and imposing , some remote and hard to find and they are the gems the little known ones..so beautiful.

And No!¬† I haven’t done the obvious….Not a hint of wine…although I could have…ha ha and those who know me would have expected that….but….Not on this occasion¬† I often do the unexpected!

The Red Lotus Sea( Lake)

077

It was a lovely sunny morning and we decided to take a trip to The Red Lotus Lake( Sea) locally known as Talay Bua Daeng. It was the wrong time of year to see the Lotus in full bloom so will going back in December to see that sight. We still saw a few but not many but witnessed a lot of birds and Water Buffalo who didn’t look best pleased with being disturbed…look at that grumpy face. The Buffalo are brought over in the morning and taken back to terra firma in the evening.

and also the boatman took us to a little temple on a tiny, tiny island.

This island when the water is high is virtually submerged hence the big and I mean big steps leading up to the Buddha’s. The name of the temple is Wat Don Leung on the Nong Harn Lake. One of the monks goes over to the mainland every morning to get food for the day.

We were also allowed to pick the seed pods of the lotus flower which I have seen for sale along the road but never knew what they were. I do now… They were lovely to eat a bit nutty…like me!

It was a lovely informative trip and will definitely return in December.

I hope you enjoyed this trip on the Red Lotus Sea…..stay safe, laugh a lot and be happy.

Wat Tung Tookham, Udon Thani, Thailand.

After the normal..you know.. Weekend food shopping etc

We decided to take a trip out and just 15km from Udon Thani Town is Wat Tung¬†Tookham …well we went round the houses a bit and then were pointed to this little, very little soi….Big Red men Working sign across entrance….

So we travelled along a bit and thought nought here… so went back just as said workman was removing his barrier…Ah ha so down this track¬†we went ..just one car wide and now we saw signs …so we followed the signs through a little Thai village and there it was…. Looking a bit in need of some TLC….not a bit like the pics in the tourist brochure…

It is a charming temple ..we were the only visitors and the only human life we saw¬†were 2 lone monks and 5 laughing children… as well as Buffalo grazing in the field..it was lovely!

Some of the many Buddhas here¬†are covered in Thai coins, both old and new and with the sun on them they glisten and this is made even lovelier as the temple is among the trees… it was so calm and peaceful.

Beneath the temple is a spirit ball and holy water seeps through the floor..this is a little temple which is only¬†opened during important holy days so people can collect some water…¬† the water is said to bring good luck.

The roof and walls of this temple are adorned with over 8,400 images of Phra Somdej Wat Rakhang ( Amulets) it is very beautiful.

Close by is also a Thai Silk Village so if you like traditional Thai clothes then it is the place to shop.

By this time we were starving so headed back to Udon Town and joined the hordes who were eating seafood along the front of the shops it was very busy¬†and then I had my first fried ice cream??? No pics I afraid… too hungry…¬†will take them next time as it was all lovely, freshly cooked succulent mussels and ?….That’s just your taster for another time…I am kind to you guys … Ha Ha

Until next time stay safe, have fun and laugh a lot …..Love you all x
