Healthy Eating …

I try to eat healthy or as much as I can or I want to…I like the occasional treat and why not???

I am careful about what I feed my family and my cooking methods and I do what I reasonably can… I check out things or products I am not sure of and make my own mind up as to whether I buy it or not.

I believe it is all about balance and not being fanatical as that just makes you miserable and laughter is good for you as well.

I know it is hard to check and there is a mine of information out there and some very believable I will say…But I love digging and not just the garden and sometimes I get really frustrated and just save the links for another day when my brain is clearer…

What annoys me most and there is one in particular that when I see his name connected to a statement of supposedly valid, 100% true facts….I read, double-check and read again….I also came across and interestingly…and no I am not going to name drop…I believe he has a regular tv show … But the other week I  was reading something which stated a fact and provided the name of the organisation which conducted the research… BUT… it wasn’t a clickable link..an error??? We all make those…

So  I copied and pasted the link…. yes there was a study and it totally contradicted the statement this doctor had made…

My conclusion was that he is very famous and a lot of people hang on his every word and take it as gospel and wouldn’t click the link if they had been able to anyway…Total faith in his word.

Today I read a post that mentioned him, Two in fact …One interested me as it was the topic of a post I am currently writing…. This is where the red mist took over… My husband always used to tell the kids it was “tin hat” time…lol

Real life medical doctors have investigated claims made on this show and stated that not even half of the recommendations made were based on any proven evidence at all….Now that is scary..don’t you think????

Rant over ..normal service will resume with a smile with my next post and I promise I will research everything as much as I can but please..check for yourself…Promise me that…. You owe it to yourself and your families…

Natural Foods instead of medicines?

This post sets the scene for some of my future posts where I will be telling you about natural foods which may help treat pain and inflammation, natural foods which can lower cholesterol, reduce high blood pressure, which foods are antacid and much more.

I will give you the information, the recipes so you can make your own informed decisions..which is how it should be. You should be in charge of your life and what goes in your body.

It means cooking and preparing more but it also means that you will know without a doubt what you are eating. I cook normal food, not faddy, not with expensive ingredients just day-to-day normal food. If I can make it I do, but on occasions, if I either can’t get the ingredients or don’t want to I may buy a packet mix but it is the exception for me rather than the rule. I cook recipes from around the world because that’s what we like but we also like a tasty stew and vegetables.

Does that sound good?In this post, I will give you a little background to me, how my brain ticks, my logic…. I use common sense, I use proper food and grow it where I can.

I am not vegetarian, vegan or anything else I just try to eat healthily…

I also on occasions eat you know who’s fillet of fish…and why not???

I love some veggie recipes and we eat everything in moderation…I just love a bit of meat and fish as well. But I  care how my meat gets to my table ….I grow my own fish..I started with 3 and I now have too many to count but as of yesterday someone came and took quite a few for their pond so the ones left have more room to grow and are happy little fishes.

My Xmas turkey will be raised by us and I know where my beef and pork comes from. I also know that I am lucky to know this.

I haven’t always been that lucky but my mantra is you do what YOU can and what YOU are happy with and gradually it all falls into place. I am not fanatical I just do what I can and if we all did that we would all be happier, healthier and so would our families.

Baby steps are good.

More and more people are now turning to natural means of curing their ailments than ever before…Why? So many reasons, are they better? Do they work? I think in some instances they do but I also think that sometimes we need to heed our physician as tried and tested medicines also work.

Can we find a happy medium? I think we can. Natural remedies do work but they don’t work the same on everybody. “one-size doesn’t fit all” as the saying goes.

Generic medicines have been tested, tested and tested again and work generally across the spectrum which is in some ways better as they work for the majority. Whereas natural remedies are more trial and error.  So I can see why medicines and tablets were invented as they were more stable.

It doesn’t stop me from preferring to take the natural route where I can.

I have always been a rebel on the QT… I have always questioned my doctor…I always look what is in the packet…I  question what I read on social media …I question everything…I always just do!

I want to know what my family eats. I want to know what is in my food. Even before all of what goes on now ….I questioned…Years ago ..many more than I am going to tell you…ha ha…

My kids would have loved a Mr. Frosty….One mouthful and the tongue was bright blue…In my world that set off alarm bells…

My logic was basic… and I suppose to a point it still is…If it has really small print and the name is long and unrecognizable and the list is even longer…I don’t buy it!

Tell me in plain language what is in what I am buying….

How to make your own Buttermilk.

There is more than one way to make buttermilk…Firstly I will show you the original way afterwards I will show you a quick n easy substitute. Also a non-dairy option. This shows you how to make buttermilk for the delicious buttermilk bread pictured.buttermilk-bread1

lET’S COOK! 

Ingredients:

A cup of raw fresh milk.

Allow the milk to sit covered on the kitchen top for 2/3 days until it has clabbered.

N.B: THE TERM “CLABBERED” means unpasteurised milk which has turned sour over time, the milk thickens or curdles into a thick yoghurt like texture with a strong, sour like flavour.

Put a 1/4 of a cup of the clabbered milk into a pint mason jar, add a cup of fresh milk. Note: This does not have to be raw milk.

Cover, shake to mix and let it sit at room temperature until it has clabbered again.

Repeat this step called sub-culturing several times until the milk clabbers in a 24hr period.

Now taste a little bit it should be thickened and have a tart but not bitter taste.

To make a quart of buttermilk with this culture add 6 ounces of culture to the jar and fill with fresh milk.

Cover, shake and sit at room temperature until it has clabbered.

Refrigerate, it is now ready to use.

I love that word clabbered…but we can’t all get raw milk like I can here so never fear Carol is here…lol

If you find a recipe which requires buttermilk,  and you don’t have any buttermilk..then try this…. To a cup of milk add either lemon juice or vinegar.

To 1 cup of milk add 1tbsp lemon juice, let it sit for 2 minutes and it is ready to use. If you want 2 cups then it’s 1 tbsp plus tsp of lemon juice it doesn’t require 2 tbsp to curdle the milk.

It won’t be as thick and creamy as true buttermilk and is not suitable for dressings.

But is perfect for pancakes, bread recipes, any baked recipes asking for buttermilk.

You must use this mixture withing an hour of making as it will not keep.

Non- Dairy -Option: 

1/4 cup of Almond Milk plus 3/4 cup of almond milk yoghurt plus 1/2tsp of vinegar.

Stir well, stand 2 mins and ready to use in your favourite baking recipes.

Slowly, slowly catchee Monkey!

Ha Ha….Back in the days when a large proportion of far eastern countries were  colonised and under British Rule, in their spare time soldiers tried and mostly without much success to catch monkeys as pets.

The natives showed the soldiers how to catch the monkeys by putting a cage with narrow bars and fruit in it close to the monkeys habitat. They then watched and waited while the inquisitive monkeys tried to get the fruit out through the bars. Once they had the fruit there was no way they were going to let it go but it now made them easy to catch as they couldn’t get their arm out without releasing the fruit….

As most natives only spoke what we term as ” Pidgin English” that was where this originated from….Slowly, slowly catchee monkee….

Well..this phrase now is used to descibe a slow, patient approach to something and demonstrates that careful thought is often better than rushing in head first.

So…..

My question is :

  1. Do I buy my custom domain from WP? and then can I monetise my blog without purchasing anything else?
  2.   Do I upgrade to monetise my blog?( the cost) of which is higher.bUT WILL IT PROVE THE BETTER OPTION?

Which is my best cost effective option????

I have looked AND looked but am still not sure and most of you ….It’s my age …lol…are so much better at this than me …so I would be grateful as I have sat on the perverbial fence for far too long …….
